New York City Marathon

New York marathon, in short York marathon or commonly called NYC marathon is the largest marathon of United States along with the Boston marathon and Chicago marathon. It is also the member of World Marathon Major and this event took place every year since 1970. This marathon event is controlled by New York road runner group. Only 37,000 participants can take part in the race. The race is open for all ages. Besides professional runners, armatures, old and young runners can also take part every year. The lottery system is adopted for the runners. For elite runners, the members of New York road runners and for many other recognized runners clubs, the governing body of NYC marathon have special quota for them and those runners can also take part by passing the qualifying tests.

The New York City marathon started in 1970 and only 127 runners took part in marathon at that time. Gary Muhrck was the first winner of the marathon whose finish the race in 2.31.38. But its popularity is increasing and growing day by day and now it is included in world’s major and largest marathons. In 1976 Fred Lebow reformed its course to accommodate the growing number of runners on the track and now New York marathon route is available any where in the city. New York City marathon course map include all the division of New York City. It starts from the Staten Island at the Verrazano Bridge which is mostly used for vehicular traffic. When race begins all the runners gather on the bridge and this make a splendid view of city and event. The sight of the marathon site is really worth seeing. After crossing the bridge the New York marathon route passes from Brooklyn. The other important locations of the route include Bedford Stuyvesant, Williamsburg, Bay ridge, Sunset Park, Green point, Pulaski Bridge, Queens, East river, Queensboro bridge, Manhattan, Bronx, Harlem, Central Park, Columbus Circle and the race finally finishes at Tavern on the Green.

Pulaski Bridge is the halfway of the total route and crossing the Manhattan is the most difficult part of the whole route. As height of the route increases instantaneously, the runners become very tired at that point. The race is started on every 4th of November at 10.10 am and the official recommended time for the whole course is 8.5 hours. New York half marathon is also being organized for armature and non professional runners. A separate division for wheelchair and hand cycle was introduced first time in 2000. As New York City marathon is one of the largest marathon and is sported by large media coverage. The live broadcast is on-aired by NBC sports channel which is a famous local channel. Thousands of spectators from all over the USA and neighboring countries come to see the marathon and approximately 315 million people form all over the world watch this event on TV.
